FROM STAFF REPORTS

University of Montevallo junior Mike Rinzema was named the Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week after helping the nationally-ranked Falcons remain unbeaten in two matches last week.

Rinzema helped his squad as he scored a goal in the 2-2 tie with Flagler College and helped gain a 2-0 shutout of Eckerd College. Rinzema had key moments on offense and defense for the Falcons, scoring a goal against Flagler and shutting down Eckerd in a win.

Rinzema began with his first goal of the season in the 87th minute at Flagler. He headed in a cross on a free kick that sent the game to overtime, where he helped the Falcons’ defense keep the Saints off the board.

Rinzema carried that effort on to Eckerd, holding the Tritons to two shots on goal. He leads a defense that is third in the conference with four goals allowed and tied for second with a 1.00 goals against average.

Rinzema and the Falcons return to action Sept. 14 as they travel to the University of Alabama at Huntsville for an afternoon contest.
