Wilsonville

Barbara Edwards McEwen, age 80, a resident of Wilsonville, died on Sept. 17, 2011. Bolton Funeral Home of Columbiana directing. Mrs. McEwen’s funeral will be Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at 2 p.m. at her church, Wilsonville Baptist in Wilsonville. Dr. Steve Thomas (her pastor) and Dr. Jim Smith (friend and former pastor) will be leading in a service of worship celebrating Mrs. McEwen’s life. We will bury our devoted wife and beloved mother and sister’s body in Wilsonville Cemetery with the Rev. Frank Sims officiating as we commend her into the hands of God. We invite you to visit with the family at the church from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Mrs. McEwen is preceded in death by her father, Claude Edwards, and her mother, Mae Edwards. Left with loving memories her husband, Samuel McEwen, and daughter, Melissa McEwen; a brother, Paul Edwards (Tommie); two nephews, Davy Edwards (Sheila) and Danny Edwards Pam); and a great-nephew, Hugh Daniel Edwards.

Mrs. McEwen was a graduate of Shelby County High; graduated from Alabama College for Women (now the University of Montevallo) with a degree in piano performance. She was the pianist or organist most of her adult life at Wilsonville Baptist Church, and she was band director at Vincent High School. She was a charter member of Wilsonville Fine Arts Club and Wilsonville Civitan, where she was honored with the Foundation Fellowship Award.

She married Sammy and was his faithful helpmate working alongside him at McEwen’s Grocery Store. She also worked for Columbiana First National Bank for a number of years before rejoining Sammy in the grocery business.

Mrs. McEwen had a great love for God, and it was demonstrated through the life she lived. Her life reached far and beyond the church and into the community. It was always her heart’s desire to serve and do the will of the Lord as his humble servant.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Wilsonville Baptist Building Fund.
