FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team downed visiting North Georgia College and State University 2-1 despite playing a man down for 49 minutes in a match Sept. 24.

The Falcons (5-2-1 overall, 1-0-1 in Peach Belt Conference) scored both of their goals with one less player on the field after a red card was given with four minutes to play in the first half.

Montevallo’s goals came from junior Patrick Dean and sophomore Jackson Tolleson.

The Falcons and Saints played a very physical and defensive game early in the first period. Montevallo took eight shots in the first period, including two on goal, while the Saints had five shots including three on goal.

The Falcons finally broke through in the 45th minute as Montevallo was awarded a free kick.

Senior Phil Jacksono sent a ball towards the goal and Dean deflected the ball past the keeper to give Montevallo a 1-0 lead to head into halftime.

The Saints struck just seven minutes into the second half as Manuel Hernandez hit a shot to the upper right corner of the goal to tie the game at one. Just 12 minutes later, Jackson once again set the Falcons up for victory as he sent a cross into the box that found the feet of Tolleson who collected the ball and sent it to the far post to beat the Saints’ keeper.

The Sainst out-shot the Falcons 8-7 in the second half while both teams had three shots on goal.

Sophomore Brendan Ledgeway made five saves to pick up his fifth win of the season. Rade Tanaskovic made three saves in the loss for the Saints.

Junior Shane Howard led the Falcons with five shots, including two on goal, while Tolleson had three shots.

The Falcons return to action Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. as they travel to the University of West Florida for a non-conference match.
