The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team continued USC-Aiken’s scoreless streak against the Falcons in a 4-0 victory Oct. 2.
The Pacers have not scored against the Falcons in any of the three previous meetings between the Peach Belt Conference rivals. Montevallo downed Aiken 1-0 in 2003, 4-0 in 2009 and 2-0 in 2010.
The Falcons (6-2-2, 2-0-1 in Peach Belt Conference) were led by senior Phil Jackson, who scored the Falcons’ first goal and assisted on two others.
Jackson is the reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week and he did not disappoint the home fans as he scored the first goal of the game just 7:50 into the first half. Jackson took a free kick from 30 yards out which found the far corner of the net to give Montevallo a 1-0 lead.
Just 22 minutes later Jackson took another free kick which was headed in by freshman Giuliano Frano to extend the Falcons lead to two. The score would remain 2-0 heading into halftime. Montevallo outshot the Pacers 7-2 in the first half and did not allow a shot on goal the entire period.
Just eight minutes into the second half Jackson made a fantastic run through the Aiken defense and slotted the ball to sophomore Jackson Tolleson, who finished with a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 advantage.
Montevallo’s final goal came just 12 minutes later as junior Steven Didik crossed the ball to freshman Alex Morton, who kicked it past a diving keeper to give UM a 4-0 lead.
USCA out-shot the Falcons 7-6 in the second half and each team had two shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway made two saves in the contest to preserve his fifth shutout of the season.
The Falcons used 27 players in the game with 10 registering at least one shot. Morton led the Falcons with three shots including two on goal, while junior Shane Howard took two.
The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. as they host Clayton State University.
