The Greater Shelby Chamber of Commerce will hold one if its most “inspirational and emotional” events Oct. 19 as it honors those who work to keep Shelby County safe.

During its October membership luncheon, Chamber members will announce the winners of the organization’s annual safety awards.

Several weeks before the luncheon, Chamber officials mailed out officer of the year forms to law enforcement and fire departments across Shelby County. After officers and firefighters at the various agencies chose their nominations, they returned the forms to the Chamber.

The nominations also include detailed descriptions of why the officer, deputy or firefighter was nominated, said GSCC Executive Director Jennifer Whisenant.

“It’s very inspirational, and at the same time emotional to see what these officers and firefighters do every day,” Whisenant said.

Because the officers of the year are nominated by their peers, they often view the award as a “big honor,” Whisenant said. Chamber member businesses often donate items such as gift cards to those awarded during the safety award luncheon.

“It can be a big thing for them to get these awards, because it’s something that’s given by their peers,” Whisenant said. “We think it’s a nice way for us to thank those who keep us safe and allow us to do business in Shelby County.”

The luncheon will be held at the Pelham Civic Complex Oct. 19. Business networking will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the luncheon will begin shortly before noon. Cost for lunch is $17 for GSCC members, and is $25 for non-members.

Attendees can RSVP for the luncheon online at Shelbychamber.org, or by calling 663-8923 or 663-4542.
