Dr. Shirley A. Reed

Richmond, Ind.

Dr. Shirley Anne Reed, age 72, passed away at her home after battling lung cancer on Friday, Sept. 30. She was born in Richmond, Ind., where she spent the first six years of her childhood. Her family moved to Miami, Fla., where she attended Miami High School and the University of Miami. She was active in both the high school and university band.

After she received her bachelors in education, she returned to Richmond, Ind., to teach elementary school. She also taught elementary school in Arizona and Florida. She attended Ball State University and received her doctorate of education. She taught in the College of Education at the University of Montevallo. After retirement, she volunteered as a docent at the Birmingham Museum of Art. She was also very involved in American Shetland Sheepdog Rescue, which became her passion. She was very active in Sheltie Rescue and was a part of a large sheltie rescue network all over the United States.

She is survived by a cousin, Betty Benton of Fort Wayne, Ind.; several nieces and nephews; and her partner and friend of 26 years, Judy Johnston of Harpersville. Dr. Reed will be honored in a “Celebration of Life” at her home on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.
