The Kingwood Christian School Lions fell 28-27 in overtime during their homecoming game against the Lyman Ward Military Academy Rangers.

“We didn’t play well tonight,” said Kingwood head coach Bob Spurgeon. “We didn’t tackle well. We had several chances to score and we didn’t take advantage of them.”

The Lions racked up 298 total yards on the night, and quarterback Gavin Sumrall completed 14 of 19 passing attempts for 237 yards and a touchdown.

Montez Haynes led the Lions in receiving yards, reeling in three passes for 96 yards. Defensively, Terrence Peeples recorded eight tackles and Tyler Mills recorded six tackles and a sack.

Kingwood lit up the scoreboard first when Sumrall connected with Haynes on a 91-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. Luke Edge added the PAT to put Kingwood on top 7-0.

The Lions scored again in the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Dalton Sparks. Edge’s extra point gave Kingwood a 14-0 lead at halftime.

The Rangers tied the game in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns on a 13-yard run and a 12-yard run, respectively.

Kingwood regained the lead with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter when Charles Robinson ran into the end zone from 12 yards out.

However, Lyman Ward again tied the game before the end of the fourth quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run.

After winning the overtime coin toss, the Rangers lit up the scoreboard on a 3-yard rushing touchdown and successful PAT.

Robinson answered for the Lions on a 9-yard touchdown run, but a blocked PAT sealed the Rangers’ victory.
