Falcons upset Bearcats in men’s soccer match

For the second-straight match, the University of Montevallo men’s soccer team upset a top-15 ranked team with a 2-0 shutout of Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference match Oct. 8.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway pushed his scoreless streak to 397 minutes, which moves him into third in the Falcons’ record book for longest scoreless streaks. Ledgeway is now just 117 minutes away from breaking the Montevallo record, which is currently held by Melford James Jr.
Ledgeway made four saves in the victory and now has seven shutouts on the season which leads the Peach Belt Conference.
Montevallo (8-2-2 overall, 4-0-1 in Peach Belt Conference) scored the opening goal of the game in the 29th minute as senior Phil Jackson scored off an assist from sophomore Ricky Davey. The Falcons outshot the Bearcats 3-0 in the first half.
In the second half, junior Shane Howard provided the insurance goal off an assist from Alex Morton in the 71st minute.
Ledgeway made all four of his saves in the second half as Lander out-shot the Falcons 6-2.
There were just 11 total fouls called in the match with seven against UM and four against LU. Each team was awarded a yellow card.
The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. as they travel to Lincoln Memorial University for a non-conference contest.
