Falcons fall to Pacers in volleyball match

The University of Montevallo volleyball team dropped its second-straight five-set match following a 3-2 loss Oct. 12 to visiting USC-Aiken.
The match was also the annual Dig Pink match in which the Falcons raised funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.
The Falcons (8-12 overall, 3-5 in Peach Belt Conference) were led by sophomore Manyi Ati, who had 20 kills, seven digs and six blocks.
Montevallo hit .174 and held USC Aiken to a .120 hitting percentage but it was not enough as the Falcons gave up 11 service aces and had nine service errors. The Falcons also outblocked the Pacers 17-9.
Freshman Michelle Walker had 12 kills, nine digs and three blocks, including one solo block. Sophomore Michelle Carle added eight kills and five blocks. Freshman Jewell Sherrer also had five blocks including one solo.
Senior libero Rachel Wotitzky had a team-high 18 digs, while senior setter Anna Garrison was second in digs with 16 and added 51 assists.
Senior Jessica Guidry had 14 digs, followed by sophomore Kaleigh Harvery, who added 10 digs.
Montevallo dropped the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21 before winning sets three and four 25-18 and 25-21. The final set went into extra points as the Pacers pulled off the victory 16-14.
Jessica Loper led the Pacers with 10 kills while five others had seven or more kills.
The Falcons will be back in action this Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. as they host Lander University in the final home match of the 2011 season. The Falcons will honor their three seniors prior to the match.
