TALLADEGA — The Chelsea High School football team took a 48-3 win over Talladega on the road Oct. 14 in an AHSAA Class 5A, Region 5 match-up.

Hornets head coach Wade Waldrop said team mistakes on the first two drives stopped Chelsea short of the endzone, but they capitalized on each following drive until the clock ran out.

Junior Antwon Williams started it off for the Hornets with a 1-yard touchdown run, and sophomore Austin Washington added a 10-yard and 16-yard touchdown to give Chelsea a 21-3 lead going into the half.

Senior Jake Ganus opened up the second half with a 50-yard touchdown, and senior Matt Mann added to the Chelsea lead with a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Hornets stung again with a 4-yard touchdown run by Jenoah Finch, and Mann found the end zone again on a 22-yard touchdown run. Following a 25-yard run by Finch, the Hornets took a knee to end the game.

“The defense played really well all night long,” Waldrop said on holding Talladega to only 3 points on the night. “We practiced really well this week, so I felt like we were going to play well.”

Washington ran for more than 100 yards, and sophomore Taylor Martindale sunk all but one of the Hornets PATs.
