Chelsea girls win section cross country title

The Chelsea High School girls cross country team claimed a Class 5A section title Nov. 3 in a section meet at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School.

The Hornets claimed the top two spots in individual standings at the section meet, which earned Chelsea a trip to the Class 5A state meet Nov. 12 at Indian Mounds Park in Oakville. Danielle Whitehurst led Chelsea and claimed the individual section title with her time of 21:54.58. Cheyenne Thompson came in second overall with her time of 22:20.73.

Kelsey Knecht finished fourth overall with her time of 23:27.12. Ann-Kathryn Smith finished eighth overall with her time of 24:43.71. Ashley Morgan came in ninth overall with her time of 24:43.89.

The Chelsea boys also advanced to the state meet Nov. 12 after finishing second in the boys’ team standings at the section meet.

Alex Burdette of Chelsea finished second overall in the individual standings with his time of 18:47.39. The Hornets’ Nick Adams finished sixth overall with his time of 19:06.04. David Simpson of Chelsea finished eighth overall with his time of 19:06.04.

The Indian Springs girls’ team qualified for the Class 3A state meet after finishing second in team standings at the section meet. Victoria Saenz claimed the section title after finishing first with her time of 21:31.72. Elizabeth Miller came in eighth overall with her time of 23:55.59.
