FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team continued its hot start with a 75-63 win on the road at the University of West Florida in a non-conference game Nov. 16.

The Falcons (3-0) were led by senior Antoine Davis, who scored a career-high 27 points while leading the team in steals with five and blocks with two. Davis was 10-of-16 from the field and hit 7-of-9 free throws.

Senior D.J. Rivera continued his quick start to the season as he scored 23 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. He also chipped in three steals.

Davis and Rivera accounted for 50 of the teams 75 points while the next highest Montevallo scorer was senior Jervan Jackson, who chipped in six points and a pair of boards.

The Falcons shot 45.9 percent from the field while West Florida hit 49 percent of its shots. Montevallo’s strong free throw shooting faded a bit during the game as the Falcons hit just 64 percent of their free throws compared to their season average, which was over 80 percent.

The Argonauts continued their bizarre streak of having taken no 3-pointers all season. They now have played three games without launching a shot from downtown. The Falcons took 10 3-pointers while hitting just three.

Montevallo outscored the Argos 48-32 in the paint while taking a 30-15 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Falcons trailed just once the entire game as a lay-up gave the Argonauts a 17-15 lead midway through the first half. Montevallo responded with a 16-4 run which gave the Falcons a 31-21 lead with 3:50 left in the half. The Falcons ended the first half with a 37-27 lead.

With 12:52 to play and the Falcons up 48-34 the Argonauts went on a 14-2 run to cut Montevallo’s lead to just two but that would be as close as the Argos would get as the Falcons held them off late in the contest. Montevallo’s strong free throw shooting down the stretch extended the Falcons lead to as much as 14 but the game would end with the Falcons up by 12, 75-63.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. as they host Carver Bible College in the 2011-2012 home opener.
