Montevallo crushes Carver Bible in men’s basketball home opener

The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team remained unbeaten following a 97-69 victory over Carver Bible College in its home opener Nov. 19.

The Falcons (4-0) were led by senior D.J. Rivera, who scored 29 points, made five steals, dished out three assists and grabbed six rebounds. Junior Marvin Fitzgerald chipped in 17 points and five rebounds while hitting 8-of-9 shots from the field.

Senior Jervan Jackson was the only other Falcon in double figures with 14 points and seven boards. Junior Jeff Hefner led the Falcons with 11 rebounds.

Montevallo shot 50 percent from the field while Carver Bible hit 46 percent. The biggest difference came on the boards and in turnovers. The Falcons outrebounded Carver Bible 47-26 and caused 23 turnovers which led to a 36-14 advantage in points off turnovers.

Montevallo never trailed in the game with its largest first half lead being 19 as they led 45-26 with 2:00 minutes to play in the period. The half ended with the Falcons ahead 48-33. Montevallo continued to build its lead in the second half with the largest gap coming as time expired 97-69.

The Falcons will return to action this Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to Miles College for a non-conference game.
