Montevallo women’s basketball team drops conference opener

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team lost its Peach Belt Conference opener at home Dec. 3 to Georgia Southwestern State University, 101-57.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 11-2 lead in the opening four minutes and never looked back.

The Falcons (4-3 overall, 0-1 in Peach Belt Conference) were led by junior Trena Moore-Smith, who had 16 points and four assists. Both figures were team highs.

Freshman Taylor Beverly added 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Junior Zena Nasiloski led the team in rebounding with 10 boards, while adding six points. Junior Teanna Boxley chipped in nine points and three assists.

The Falcons shot 30.2 percent from the field, while the Hurricanes hit 47.6 percent. Montevallo continued to struggle from the free-throw line, hitting just 57.7 percent of its attempts.

The Hurricanes used a 62-34 advantage in rebounding to score 33 second chance points and used all of the Falcons’ 16 turnovers to take a 22-3 lead in points off turnovers.

The Hurricanes had five players in double figures and were led by Adrian Randall, who had 25 points and 17 boards.

The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. as they host Columbus State University in another Peach Belt Conference game.
