FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team suffered its second Peach Belt Conference loss of the season Dec. 6 to Columbus State University, 73-51.

The Falcons (4-4 overall, 0-2 in Peach Belt Conference) looked to be in control early in the contest, but a late first-half run gave the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish as they took home a 22-point victory.

The Falcons were led by senior Tiffany McClure, who had eight points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Taylor Beverly also scored eight points in the loss.

Senior Davia Harris and junior Teanna Boxley each chipped in seven points. Harris added six blocks as well.

The Falcons hit 32.8 percent of their shots while going a perfect 3-of-3 at the free-throw line. The Cougars hit 42 percent from the field and were 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Columbus State out-rebounded the Falcons 45-39 and had a 23-7 advantage in second chance points.

Montevallo jumped out to an 8-2 lead just three minutes into the game and the Falcons would hold onto the lead until the 8:58 mark, where a lay-up by the Cougars gave Columbus State a 16-14 lead. The Falcons quickly responded with five straight points to retake the lead, but an 8-0 run by the Cougars to end the first half gave Columbus State a 30-22 lead at the break.

A quick start by the Cougars in the second half gave them a 42-24 lead just 2:20 into the period. The Falcons were able to cut that lead to 11 points, but the Cougars responded by eventually building up a 26-point lead with 4:13 left in the game. Columbus State held that lead the rest of the way as they coasted to a 73-51 victory.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Dec. 10 at 1:30 p.m. as they host Miles College in a non-conference game.
