Panthers finish third in Invitational

The Pelham High School wrestling team finished third in team standings in its Panthers Invitational meet Dec. 9-10.

Pelham trailed only Mountain Brook and Tuscaloosa County in the event.

Thompson finished in sixth place in the team standings. Calera came in 14th in team standings, while Chelsea finished 16th.

Cody Wehunt led the Panthers as he claimed the 160-pound championship. Wehunt, who had four pins during the meet, earned a 8-7 decision over Coby Mize in the 160-pound championship match.

Tre Maynard of Pelham finished second in the 182-pound bracket. Maynard, who had two pins, a technical fall and a decision, dropped a 3-1 decision to Alex Hopson in the 182-pound title match.

Giovanni Adan of Pelham came in fourth in the 132-pound bracket. Adan won four matches before being pinned by Thomas Thagard of Mountain Brook in the 132-pound consolation match.

Chris Shiflett of Pelham finished fourth in the 220-pound bracket. Shiflett won four matches before being pinned by Hunter Jenkins of Tuscaloosa County in the 220-pound consolation match.

Jacob Megois led Thompson as he claimed the 106-pound championship. Megois, who finished with five pins and a decision, pinned Logan Smith of Hartselle in the 106-pound match.

Brandon Belser finished third in the 120-pound bracket. Belser, who finished with three pins, earned a 8-0 major decision over Brent Carr of Buckhorn in the 120-pound consolation match.

Clay Anthony came in fourth in the 113-pound bracket. Anthony, who had three pins, was pinned by Gene Thagard of Mountain Brook in the 113-pound consolation match.

Tyler Lacey finished fourth in the 126-pound bracket. Lacey, who finished with five pins, dropped a 10-2 major decision against Jeremy Strong of Vestavia Hills in the 126-pound consolation match.

Mize led Calera as he finished runner-up in the 160-pound bracket. Mize, who finished with four pins, pinned Austin Chandler of Mountain Brook in the semifinals before dropping an 8-7 decision against Wehunt in the 160-pound championship match.

Kevin Murry of Calera came in fourth in the heavyweight bracket. Murry, who had three pins, dropped a 4-2 decision to Dalton Bratton of Vestavia Hills in the heavyweight consolation match.

David Downard led Chelsea after finishing 10th in the heavyweight bracket. Downard pinned Justin Armstrong of St. Clair County and Morris Scott of Homewood in his lone victories in individual matches.
