Warriors claim Alabama Duals championship

The Thompson High School wrestling team claimed the 2011 Alabama Duals championship Dec. 22 at Samford University after finishing undefeated in the pool and championship rounds.

The Warriors defeated Piedmont, Benjamin Russell, Oxford and Scottsboro in the championship round.

Thompson defeated Piedmont 62-18 in its first championship round match. Eleven Warriors won individual matches against Piedmont, including Conner Gilson, Austin Gould, Reed Jacks, Mario Haynes, Brewer Gilliland, Cody Albarado, Nick Hall, John Austin (J.A.) Jones, Josh Gillaspie, Cahman Holder and David Capers.

The Warriors topped Benjamin Russell 64-6 in its second championship round match. Thirteen Thompson wrestlers won individual matches against Benjamin Russell, including Gilson, Gould, Jacks, Haynes, Gilliland, Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Holder, Capers, Nick Gentile and Jesse Masters.

Thompson defeated Scottsboro 56-6 in its third championship round match. Twelve Warriors won individual matches against Scottsboro, including Gilson, Gould, Jacks, Gilliland, Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Holder, Gentile, Masters and Capers.

Thompson took down Oxford 63-3 in its final championship round match. Twelve Warriors won individual matches against Oxford, including Gilson, Gould, Jacks, Haynes, Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Holder, Gentile, Masters and Capers.

Thompson finished first in its pool during the Alabama Duals. The Warriors defeated Vestavia Hills, Gardendale, Montgomery Catholic and Brusly (La.) in its pool.

Albarado led Thompson with seven pins in the two-day event.

Jones, Holder, Gentile and Masters added five pins each. Gillaspie, Hall and Jacks finished with four pins each. Gilliland, Gould and Gilson recorded three pins each. Haynes and Capers posted two pins.

Oak Mountain fell to Scottsboro 51-23 in the third-place match in the championship round of the Alabama Duals.

Four Eagles won individual matches against Scottsboro.

John David (J.D.) Peden of Oak Mountain earned a 16-1 technical fall over Arick Shankles of Scottsboro in the 107-pound match. Justin Woodall of Oak Mountain pinned Jacob Wilson of Scottsboro in 1:01 in the 196-pound match.

Christopher Richmond of Oak Mountain pinned Matthew Franko of Scottsboro in 1:57 in the 221-pound match. Billy Dasher of Oak Mountain won his heavyweight match by forfeit.

Oak Mountain finished third in its pool during the Alabama Duals. The Eagles defeated Spain Park and Clay-Chalkville while dropping matches against Opelika and Scottsboro in its pool.

Woodall and Vincent Kimbrough led the Eagles with six pins each in the two-day event.

Peden added four pins. Richmond, Dasher, Bronson Lubresky, Jacob Darty, Sam Jasinski and Evan Webb finished with two pins each. Stephen Chandler recorded one pin.

Pelham finished fifth in its pool during the Alabama Duals. The Panthers dropped matches against Thompson, Hoover, Benjamin Russell and Oxford in its pool.

Pelham defeated Spain Park 52-21 in the fifth-place match in the consolation round of the Alabama Duals. Ten Panthers won individual matches against Spain Park.

Wade Thomas of Pelham pinned Jackson Cotney of Spain Park in 15 seconds in the 114-pound match. Nick English of Pelham won his 121-pound match by forfeit.

Giovanni Adan of Pelham pinned Andres Galindo of Spain Park in 37 seconds in the 127-pound match. Mason Tortorich of Pelham pinned Michael Parker of Spain Park in 49 seconds in the 133-pound match.

Robby Brantley of Pelham earned a 11-9 decision over Connor Whatley of Spain Park in the 139-pound match. Stephen Janoulis of Pelham won his 146-pound match by forfeit.

Jacob George of Pelham earned a 11-2 major decision over Dillon Osborne of Spain Park in the 171-pound match. Tre Maynard of Pelham earned a 8-2 decision over Blake Daniel of Spain Park in the 183-pound match.

John Brito-Cuevas of Pelham won his 196-pound match by forfeit. Nicholas Seplow of Pelham won his heavyweight match by forfeit.

Wehunt led Pelham with three pins during the two-day event. Maynard and Brito-Cuevas finished with two pins each. Thomas, Adan, Tortorich, Farren and George finished with one pin each.

Four Spain Park wrestlers won individual matches against Pelham.

Elijah Krukowski of Spain Park earned a 10-8 decision over Riley Pike of Pelham in the 107-pound match. Marcus Jackson of Spain Park pinned Alex Riley of Pelham in 48 seconds in the 153-pound match.

Kevin McClure of Spain Park pinned Cody Wehunt of Pelham in 1:34 in the 161-pound match. Mo Mills of Spain Park pinned Kenny Hoover of Pelham in 5:16 in the 221-pound match.

Spain Park finished fourth in its pool during the Alabama Duals. The Jaguars defeated Clay-Chalkville while dropping matches to Oak Mountain, Opelika and Scottsboro in its pool.

Leon Strong led the Jaguars with three pins in the two-day event.

Jackson and McClure added two pins each. Parker, Krukowski, Osborne, Mills and Kameron Ricks finished with one pin each.

Thompson fielded two additional teams in the Alabama Duals.

The Thompson No. 2 team defeated Clay-Chalkville 46-24 in the first-place match in the consolation round of the Alabama Duals.

Kolby Newton and Brandon Belser led the Thompson No. 2 team with three pins each.

Clint Milligan and Clay Anthony added two pins each. Jacob Megois, Hayden Franklin, Jacobi Dial and Jacob Mayhall finished with one pin each.

The Thompson No. 3 team defeated Montgomery Catholic 60-5 in the seventh-place match in the consolation round of the Alabama Duals.

Jacob Fox led the Thompson No. 3 team with three pins.

Austin Wilhite, Joseph Mayhall and Matthew Johnson added two pins each. Justin Berry, Brian Mwai, Hunter Gatlin, Luke Hester, Trey Watson, Tyler Hicks, Luis Munoz, Luke Moore and Jaden Hunter finished with one pin each.
