Warriors claim Deep South Bayou Duals title

The Thompson High School wrestling team took on all comers, including 48 teams across nine states, during the Deep South Bayou Duals tournament Dec. 29-30 in Brusly, La.

The Warriors emerged from the field as champions after defeated Jefferson City (Mo.) 37-24 in the championship match Dec. 30.

Eight Thompson wrestlers won individual matches against Jefferson City.

Conner Gilson of Thompson earned a 3-0 decision over Corbin Howard of Jefferson City in the 106-pound match. Austin Gould of Thompson won his 113-pound match by forfeit.

Brewer Gilliland of Thompson earned a 11-0 major decision over Ty Archer of Jefferson City in the 132-pound match. Nick Hall of Thompson earned a 15-5 major decision over Payne Stark of Jefferson City in the 145-pound match.

John Austin (J.A.) Jones of Thompson earned a 8-0 major decision over Cameron Cotten of Jefferson City in the 152-pound match. Josh Gillaspie of Thompson earned a 11-1 major decision over D.J. Jones of Jefferson City in the 160-pound match.

Jesse Masters of Thompson pinned Zach Eggen of Jefferson City in 1:52 in the 182-pound match. Hunter Pinneo of Thompson won his 220-pound match by forfeit.

The Warriors finished undefeated in five pool matches.

Thompson defeated West Orange (Fla.) 66-0 in its opening match. Gilson, Clay Anthony, Brandon Belser, Mario Haynes, Gilliland, Jacob Mayhall, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Nick Gentile, Masters, Pinneo, David Capers and Jake Rakestraw each won matches for the Warriors.

Thompson defeated East Ascension (La.) 69-6 in its second pool match. Gilson, Gould, Reed Jacks, Haynes, Gilliland, Cody Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Cahman Holder, Masters, Capers and Pinneo each won matches for the Warriors.

Thompson defeated Collierville (Tenn.) 57-18 in its third pool match. Gilson, Haynes, Gilliland, Mayhall, Hall, Jones, Holder, Gentile, Masters and Pinneo each won matches for the Warriors.

Thompson defeated Rummel (La.) 45-20 in its fourth pool match. Gilson, Jacks, Haynes, Gilliland, Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Holder and Capers each won matches for the Warriors.

Thompson defeated West Oak (S.C.) 59-18 in its final pool match. Gilson, Gould, Jacks, Haynes, Gilliland, Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Gentile and Masters each won matches for the Warriors.

The Warriors defeated North Forsyth (Ga.) 47-9 in its quarterfinal match in the championship round. Gilson, Gould, Jacks, Haynes, Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Capers, Pinneo and Rakestraw each won matches for Thompson.

Thompson defeated Brother Martin (La.) 36-28 in its semifinal match. Haynes, Gilliland, Albarado, Hall, Jones, Gillaspie, Masters and Pinneo each won matches for the Warriors.

Jones led the Warriors with six pins in the tournament. Hall and Gilliland added five pins each. Masters, Pinneo and Gentile had three pins each.

Jacks, Capers, Holder and Gilson recorded two pins each. Albarado, Rakestraw, Mayhall, Haynes and Gillaspie finished with one pin each.
