Six crowned champs at Invitational

Six high school wrestlers from Shelby County claimed individual championships at the Scott Rohrer Invitational on Jan. 7 at Hoover High School.

Justin Woodall of Oak Mountain, Tommy Bostany and Mo Mills of Spain Park and Nick Hall, John Austin (J.A.) Jones and Josh Gillaspie of Thompson each claimed individual titles.

The Thompson High School wrestling team captured the team championship at the Invitational.

Three Warriors claimed individual titles during the Invitational.

Hall won the 147-pound championship. Hall earned a 8-6 decision over Jackson Poe of Hoover in the 147-pound title match.

Jones claimed the 154-pound title. Jones earned a 6-3 decision over Chase McClure of Scottsboro in the 154-pound championship match.

Gillaspie captured the 162-pound championship. Gillaspie earned a 4-2 decision over Jack Nelson of Vestavia Hills in the 162-pound title match.

Brewer Gilliland led Thompson with five pins during the Invitational.

Nick Gentile finished with four pins. Gillaspie, Jones, Cahmon Holder and Hunter Pinneo added three pins each.

Hall, Mario Haynes, Austin Gould and Conner Gilson finished with two pins each. Jacob Mayhall and Branden Belser finished with one pin each.

Oak Mountain finished sixth in the Hoover Invitational team standings.

Woodall led the Eagles after capturing the 197-pound individual championship. Woodall pinned Kameron Ricks of Spain Park in 5:07 in the 197-pound title match.

Woodall led Oak Mountain with five pins in the Invitational.

John David (J.D.) Peden, Billy Dasher and Vincent Kimbrough recorded three pins each. Chris Richmond, Evan Webb, Jared Godfrey and Lloyd Time had two pins each.

Angus McBee, Trigg Langner and Bronson Lubresky finished with one pin each.

Spain Park came in 10th in the Hoover Invitational team standings.

Two Jaguars captured individual championships in the event.

Bostany won the 122-pound championship. Bostany earned an 8-3 decision over Craig Malone of Scottsboro in the 122-pound title match.

Bostany, who won his weight division in last season’s Hoover Invitational, became the first Spain Park wrestler to repeat as a champion in the event.

Mills claimed the 222-pound title. Mills earned a 2-1 decision over Ryan Stenger of Bob Jones in the 222-pound championship match.

Kameron Ricks led the Jaguars with five pins in the Invitational.

Mills added four pins. Bostany and Kevin McClure recorded two pins each. Blake Daniel and Elijah Krukowski finished with one pin each.

Pelham finished 20th in team standings in the Invitational.

Cody Wehunt led the Panthers after finishing fourth in the 162-pound division. Wehunt earned a 11-2 major decision over Rich McClellan of Benjamin Russell in the quarterfinals before dropping a 4-0 decision to Josh Gillaspie of Thompson in the 162-pound semifinals.

Wehunt and Nicholas Farren led Pelham with two pins each.

Riley Pike, Chris Shiflett, John Brito-Cuevas and Robby Brantley recorded one pin each.
