U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus will have competition for his District 6 seat in the March 13 primary.

State Sen. Scott Beason, R-Gardendale, announced Jan. 12 he will run against Bachus for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Alabama’s District 6 includes Shelby County.

Beason is currently serving his second term in the Alabama State Senate. Previously, he served two terms in the Alabama House of Representatives.

“The national debt is out of control,” Beason said in a press release. “Spending is out of control. Washington is out of control, and the sad part is that many Republicans are just as responsible for the problems as the Democrats. It is time for change in Washington.”

Blount County Probate Judge David Standridge, who also serves as the Blount County Commission chairman, will also run in the Republican primary for the District 6 seat. He is expected to make his announcement official Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Blount County Courthouse.

Retired Air Force Col. Penny Huggins Bailey has also announced her candidacy for the District 6 Congressional seat. She will run against William Barnes, an attorney from Clay, in the Democratic primary March 13.
