Former Jag sets career milestone

Former Spain Park High School basketball standout Josh Magette, a senior at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, recently became the first player in Gulf South Conference history to compile 1,000 career points, 700 career assists and 500 career rebounds.

Magette’s accomplishments recently earned him his third Gulf South Conference Player of the Week honor during his career with the Chargers.

Magette scored 18 points while handing out 10 assists in UAH’s 86-72 win over Valdosta State on Jan. 12. He also scored 22 points with another set of 10 assists in an 89-73 victory against West Florida on Jan. 14.

The contests marked Magette’s sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season.

On the season, Magette is leading all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II players in the nation with 9.3 assists per game. He ranks among the top five in the Gulf South Conference in several categories.

Magette was named an NCAA Division II preseason All-American before the start of his senior season by The Sporting News.
