Thompson wrestlers on cusp of title

The Thompson High School wrestling team is one round away from cementing its status as one of the greatest high school wrestling teams in Alabama High School Athletic Association history.

The Warriors are running away from the 34-team field in the AHSAA Class 6A state championship tournament at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Thompson has racked up 207.5 total points through the first two days of the AHSAA Class 6A tournament, and owns a nearly 80-point advantage on second-place Grissom with only the championship and consolation finals remaining Feb. 18.

The Warriors will have a school-record seven wrestlers battling for an AHSAA Class 6A individual championship on the final day of the tournament.

Connor Whatley of Thompson reached the 106-pound championship match after earning a 14-5 major decision over William Hardin of Oxford in his semifinal match.

Brewer Gilliland of Thompson reached the 132-pound championship match after pinning Caden McWhirter of Prattville in 1:47 in his semifinal match.

Cody Albarado of Thompson reached the 138-pound championship match after pinning Hunter Lee of Oxford in 3:07 in his semifinal match.

Nick Hall of Thompson reached the 145-pound championship match after earning a 11-1 major decision over David Baumohl of Grissom in his semifinal match.

John Austin (J.A.) Jones of Thompson reached the 152-pound championship match after pinning Kyle Miller of Grissom in 1:22 in his semifinal match.

Josh Gillaspie of Thompson reached the 160-pound championship match after earning a 4-1 decision over Nick Weldon of Clay-Chalkville in his semifinal match.

Jesse Masters of Thompson reached the 182-pound championship match after pinning Garrett Wilson of Prattville in 1:20 in his semifinal match.

Two other Thompson wrestlers will wrestle in the consolation finals Feb. 18.

Austin Gould of Thompson reached the 113-pound consolation final after pinning Austin Clark of Bob Jones in 4:51 in his semifinal match.

Mario Haynes of Thompson reached the 126-pound consolation final after earning a 4-0 decision over Griffin Ridgeway of Bob Jones in his semifinal match.

Spain Park is currently 10th in team standings.

Tommy Bostany of Spain Park will wrestle in the 120-pound championship match after earning a 6-2 decision over Preslee Kelley of Oxford in his semifinal match.

The Jaguars have two wrestlers in a consolation final.

Kameron Ricks of Spain Park reached the 195-pound consolation final after pinning Dalton Campbell of Vestavia Hills in 4:59 in his semifinal match.

Mo Mills of Spain Park will wrestle in the 220-pound consolation final after earning a 2-1 decision in overtime over T.J. Demos of Huntsville in his semifinal match.

Pelham will enter the final day of the tournament in 24th in team standings. The Panthers have one wrestler competing on the final day of the tournament.

Cody Wehunt of Pelham reached the 160-pound consolation final after earning a 4-2 decision over Nick Weldon of Clay-Chalkville in his semifinal match.
