Hornets split doubleheader with Montevallo

The Chelsea High School baseball team split a doubleheader with Montevallo in high school baseball action Feb. 24.

Montevallo defeated the Hornets 6-5 in the opener.

Chelsea was first to plate a run thanks to a solo blast by junior Davis Shoemaker. In the bottom of the third inning, Montevallo answered with three runs.

Down by three runs, Chelsea scored four runs in the fifth inning thanks to  three hit batsman and two walks by the Montevallo pitcher and took a one-run lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Montevallo added a run in the fifth inning and took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth.

Tripp Hobbs led Chelsea, going 2-2 with two singles. Joey Mock also had a hit.

Sophomore Connor McVay took the loss on the mound after pitching 2 1/3 innings. Davis Shomaker also pitched for the Hornets, throwing 3 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, Chelsea’s bats came to life lifting the Hornets to a 15-3 victory over Montevallo.

With the Bulldogs leading 2-1, the Hornets exploded with five runs in the top of the fourth and later added nine runs in the top of the sixth inning.

The Hornets were led offensively by Eli Bashour, who went 3-4, with two triples and five RBIs.

Shoemaker went 2-5, with two doubles and three RBIs. Austin Dean, Alex Dean and Brody Holder each had two hits.

Landon Wiley got the win on the mound after giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts in six innings.
