Evangel Christian splits doubleheader with New Life

The Evangel Christian School baseball team improved its Alabama Christian Sports Conference record to 2-0 on March 8  with a dramatic 2-1 win over New Life Christian Academy of Millbrook.

In the nightcap, which did not count as a conference game, New Life beat the Lightning 9-4.   For the season, Evangel is now 3-1.

Andrew Thompson drove in Brandon Mackey with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel Evangel Christian to the win in the opener.

Evangel Christian had tied the game in the fourth inning, after Daniel Ellis singled with two outs, then advanced to second on a walk to Brentley Wells.   Josh Letson’s single then scored  pinch runner Nate Scott to tie the game at 1-1.

Letson (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Lightning, pitching three shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out two.   Mackey pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits and one run.   Wells led Evangel at the plate, with two of the team’s five hits.

In the second game,  Jacob Albright had two hits and Koty Wells drove in two runs to pace Evangel.  Starting pitcher Colton Kimbrel was tagged with the loss.
