Briarwood Christian splits doubleheader in Alex City tournament

The Briarwood Christian School baseball team split a doubleheader with Russell County and Beauregard on the opening day of the Lake Martin Classic in Alexander City.

The Lions fell to Russell County 14-3 in their tournament opener March 19.

Cole Pearson led Briarwood Christian (12-4) as he went 1-for-4 at the plate, recording the Lions’ only hit.

Daniel Robert, Ben Craft and Brayden Housel scored one run each. Ethan Simmons and Craft drove in one run each.

Will Brown took the loss after giving up seven runs, including four earned runs, on 11 hits with two strikeouts in four innings.

Pearson allowed seven earned runs on five hits with two walks in 2 1/3 innings in relief. Chase Schroeder finished with one strikeout and one walk in 2/3 of an inning.

The Lions defeated Beauregard 9-6 in 10 innings in their second tournament game.

Craft led Briarwood Christian at the plate as he went 4-for-6 with a homer and a double. Craft drove in two runs and scored two runs in the victory.

Simmons finished 2-for-6 at the plate and drove in two runs. Will Dyson, who drove in two runs and scored one run, went 2-for-4 at the plate. Sam Morris finished 2-for-4 at the plate and scored one run.

Carter Tyra went 1-for-5 at the plate and drove in one run. Pearson finished 1-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Robert went 1-for-6 at the plate. Tanner Cunningham, who drove in one run and scored one run, finished 1-for-5 at the plate. Kevin McKelvey scored one run.

Jake Bracewell earned the win on the mound after recording a strikeout and three walks without giving up a hit in the the final two innings.

Cameron Adams started on the mound and gave up two earned runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk in six innings. Cunningham gave up four earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and two walks in two innings in relief.
