Falcons clinch postseason berth following sweep

The University of Montevallo baseball team clinched its first trip to the Peach Belt Conference tournament in program history and its first postseason trip since the 2008 season with a sweep of Augusta State University at home following a pair of 7-5 and 5-3 victories in a doubleheader April 7.

The Falcons (20-18 overall, 14-10 in Peach Belt Conference) took game one 7-5 and then came from behind in game two to win 5-3.

Montevallo was led by sophomore Will Fulmer, who was 5-for-9 at the plate with a double and a run scored over the two games. Senior Wes Rich, a Pelham High School graduate, came in at the end of both games to pick up a pair of saves to bring his total to six on the season. He allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts.

Junior Vincent Andrews was 3-for-7 with a homerun, three RBI, three runs scored and a pair of hit by pitches. His homerun came in the seventh inning of game two as he hit a three-run homerun to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead.

Senior Heath Peterson was 3-for-8 with two RBI, a hit by pitch, a stolen base and a run scored. Freshman Zack Willoughby was 3-for-9 with two RBI. Senior Kirk Waligora was 3-for-4 in game one with three runs scored and a walk.

Junior Nathan Flanagan took the mound in game one and went 5.0 innings with three strikeouts and a walk. He allowed just four hits and one run as he took home his first win of the season.

Sophomore Alex Guilford made the start in game two and pitched 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and no walks. He allowed just four hits and two runs including one earned. He took home the win and improved his record to 3-4 on the year.
