Lions qualify for state tournament

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ golf team qualified for the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A state tournament following a sub-state tournament May 7 at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery.

The Lions carded a team score of 296 strokes, finishing second in team standings and 12 strokes back to St. Paul’s.

Briarwood Christian will play in the AHSAA Class 5A state tournament May 14-15 at Robert Trent Jones’ Grand National course in Opelika.

Freshman John Hayden, who broke 70 for the first time in a tournament, led the Lions with his 3-under par 69.

Banks Nash carded a 1-over par 73. Trevor Page fired a 4-over par 76.

Brent Gilbert shot a 6-over par 78. Bentley King rounded out the group of Briarwood Christian golfers with his score of 84 strokes.

Tyler Shope of Chelsea qualified for the AHSAA Class 5A state tournament as an individual after carding a 4-under par 68 in the sub-state tournament.

Chelsea finished sixth in the Class 5A sub-state tournament with a team score of 321 strokes.

Reed Kelly shot an 81, while Jesse Goss carded a 85. Josh Parker finished with an 87 and Zac Tolleson rounded out the group of Chelsea golfers with his 97.

Robbie Shelton of St. Paul’s claimed the sub-state tournament individual low medalist honors with his 9-under par 63.
