Lions in second place after opening day

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ golf team collectively carded a 19-over par 305 on the first day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A state tournament May 14 at Robert Trent Jones Grand National course, leaving the Lions two strokes behind tournament leader Fort Payne.

Trevor Page led Briarwood Christian in the first round with his even par 72, which placed him one stroke behind tournament leader Robby Shelton of St. Paul’s Episcopal.

Banks Nash of Briarwood Christian fired a 2-over par 74 in the opening round, which placed him in a three-way tie for fifth in individual standings. John Hayden of Briarwood Christian carded a 3-over par 75 in the first round, which placed him in a four-way tie for eighth overall in individual standings.

Brent Gilbert of Briarwood Christian finished with a 14-over par 86 in the opening round, which placed him 28th in individual standings. Bentley King of Briarwood Christian carded a 22-over par 94 in the first round, which placed him 22nd overall in individual standings.

Tyler Shope of Chelsea, who qualified for the Class 5A state tournament as an individual, carded a 6-over par 78 in the first round. Shope currently sits in a two-way tie for 15th overall in individual standings.

The final round will be held May 15.
