The trial date for an 86-year-old Pelham man charged with stabbing and killing his wife in 2010 will not be set until after he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation, according to court documents.

William Virgil Proctor was arrested on May 14, 2010 and charged with stabbing and killing his 77-year-old wife, Gwendolyn Elizabeth Tuggle Proctor, while she slept at the couple’s house in the 1300 block of Calliston Way in Pelham’s Ballantrae neighborhood.

Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Dan Reeves in January ordered Proctor undergo a psychiatric evaluation at the request of Proctor’s attorneys, Barry and Lara Alvis.

Shelby County Circuit Court Supervisor Jill Smitherman said no trial date will be set for Proctor until after the psychiatric evaluation results are back.

Smitherman said the time necessary for psychiatric evaluations varies on a case-by-case basis.

Proctor is being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
