Coaches of the Year announced

The Shelby County Coaches Association recently announced its spring Coaches of the Year.

Montevallo High School baseball coach Trey Simpson was named the baseball Coach of the Year. Simpson led the Bulldogs to the semifinal round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 3A playoffs. Chelsea High School softball coach Russell McCartey was named the softball Coach of the Year after leading the Hornets to their first AHSAA Class 5A state championship.

Briarwood Christian School boys’ tennis coach Chris Laatsch was named the boys’ tennis Coach of the Year. Thompson High School girls’ tennis coach Beth Montgomery was named the girls’ tennis Coach of the Year. Both Laatsch and Montgomery led their respective squads to the AHSAA state tournament.

Oak Mountain High School boys’ soccer coach Ryan Patridge was named the boys’ soccer Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to the AHSAA Class 6A championship match. Chelsea High School girls’ soccer coach Jonathan Hammett was named the girls’ soccer Coach of the Year after leading the Hornets to their first AHSAA Class 5A state championship.

Briarwood Christian School boys’ golf coach Jim Brown was named the boys’ golf Coach of the Year after leading the Lions to the AHSAA Class 5A state tournament. Thompson High School girls’ golf coach Marc Rice was named the girls’ golf Coach of the Year.

Westminster School at Oak Mountain track and field coach Dale Carrell was named the boys’ and girls’ track and field Coach of the Year after leading his squads to the AHSAA state tournament.

The association’s leadership also transitioned to Oak Mountain High School athletic director David Hogue, who will serve as the SCCA president during the 2012-2013 school year. Carrell, who also serves as the Westminster School at Oak Mountain athletic director, recently wrapped up his service as the SCCA president.
