LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team defeated the University of West Alabama 2-1 in a road match Sept. 9.

Playing on less than 48 hours of rest, the Falcons received goals from Nicole Johnston and Christine Prince to edge their former Gulf South Conference rival.

“We were a little fatigued,” said Montevallo coach Patricia Hughes, “but we did enough to squeeze out the win.

Johnston scored a goal in her third consecutive match to give the Falcons (3-0-1) a 1-0 advantage following an unassisted goal in the 28^th minute of the contest.

A flurry of activity in front of the Montevallo net in the 59^th minute allowed West Alabama to tie the match at 1-1 following a goal by Lydia Sutcliffe.

Prince netted the game-winner after scoring her first goal of the season following a feed from Johnston in the 69^th minute of the match.

Two days after recording a career-high eight saves in a 1-1 tie with Auburn University-Montgomery, Montevallo goalkeeper Kaitlin Thomas finished with six saves in the victory over West Alabama.

Montevallo will return to the field in just more than 48 hours to face another former Gulf South Conference foe, UAH. The Falcons will host the Chargers in a match Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. at Varsity Field.

“We’re certainly happy to be undefeated,” Hughes said, “but we’ve got to be ready Tuesday night with a quick turnaround.”
