Oak Mountain holds off Pell City

PELL CITY – The Oak Mountain Eagles survived a fourth-quarter rally by Pell City to take a 23-21 victory on the road on Sept. 28.
Pell City scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to draw within two, 23-21, but missed a game-winning field goal with 40 seconds left to give the Eagles the win.
“Our kids played super hard,” said Oak Mountain head coach Cris Bell. “Pell City came out and hit us in the mouth.”
The Eagles (4-1) trailed 14-8 after the first quarter with Scott Hester providing the points for Oak Mountain. Hester punched the ball in from 1-yard out with John Michael Miller adding the two point conversion.
Josh Gaines scored his first of two touchdowns in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 16-14 halftime lead after Michael Miller added the two-point conversion.
While the Eagles defense continued to hold Pell City scoreless, Gaines added to the Oak Mountain lead in the third quarter with a 15-yard run for a touchdown for a 23-14 score headed into the decisive fourth quarter.
Jake Adams led the Eagles with 103 yards rushing on 17 carries while Gaines finished with 83 yards on 12 attempts with two touchdowns. Hester had 98 yards and a score.
