Montevallo women’s soccer drops match against Lander in overtime

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team’s streak of heartbreaking endings continued Sept. 29 with a 3-2 loss to visiting Lander University in overtime at Varsity Field.

Lander University forward Jamie Shaw scored the game-winning goal in the second minute of overtime off an assist by Kimberly Kesler to lift the Bearcats to victory.

Casey Black scored a goal in the 26th minute off an assist from Nina Morales to give Lander a 1-0 lead. The Falcons (4-5-1 overall, 1-3 in Peach Belt Conference) answered with a header by junior Taylor Kerr off a corner kick by sophomore Emma Greenwood in the 40th minute to tie the match at 1-1.

Morales scored a goal in the 60th minute off an assist from Taylor Piorkowski to give the Bearcats a 2-1 advantage. Montevallo netted the equalizer in the 85th minute of the match when sophomore Camilla Alderin scored a goal off an assist from freshman Jade Pennock.

Kerr took over at goalkeeper late in the match following an injury to junior Kaitlin Thomas and recorded two saves before giving up the game-winning goal by Shaw the 91st minute of the match.

Thomas finished with four saves in the match.

The Falcons return to action Oct. 3 with a match on the road against Peach Belt Conference foe North Georgia at 4 p.m.
