Evangel makes a happy homecoming

The Evangel Christian Lightning made homecoming an enjoyable night for their fans with a 44-6 handling of Evangel Family Christian Academy on Oct. 12.

The Lightning put the first points on the board with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Thompson to Josh Leston for a 6-0 lead in the first period.

Evangel Family evened the game up at six just over three minutes later when Sheppard Waites returned a Lightning interception 62 yards for a touchdown.

Evangel Christian didn’t allow another score while pulling away from the win.

David Baggett and Clay O’Neal each scored first quarter touchdowns for a 22-6 lead at the end of the period.

O’Neal scored his second touchdown of the game in the second on a 1-yard run, followed by a 9-yard run by Jacob McCurry for a 36-6 ECS lead at the half.

The Lightning repaid the pick-six by EFCA in the first quarter with one of their own in the fourth. Grant Webster picked off the EFCA quarterback and returned the ball 36 yards for the 44-6 final score.

Baggett led ECS with 42 yards rushing on eight carries and a score. Thompson finished with 83 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception.
