Montevallo men’s soccer defeats USC Aiken in double overtime

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team broke a scoreless tie in the final minutes of double overtime to grab a 1-0 victory on the road at USC Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference match Oct. 13.

Sophomore Pedro Carneiro netted the golden goal off an assist from junior Gary O’Neill in the 107th minute of the match to lift the Falcons to their sixth conference victory of the season. Carneiro snuck a shot attempt past the USC Aiken goalkeeper in the lower left corner of the net for the game-winning goal.

The Falcons (9-3-1 overall, 6-1-1 in Peach Belt Conference) fired off 17 shots in the match before Carneiro’s game-winning goal in double overtime, compared to 13 shots by USC Aiken. Junior Ricky Davey and sophomore Pierre Omanga led the Falcons with three shots each.

Montevallo junior goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway, who finished with seven saves in the victory, posted his seventh shutout of the season. Ledgeway has posted back-to-back shutouts in the Falcons’ past two conference matches.

The Falcons return to action Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. with a non-conference match against Mount Olive College. The match will be held at a neutral site on the USC Aiken campus.
