Thompson wins area title

The Thompson High School volleyball team swept Wetumpka and Prattville to win the Class 6A, Area 7 championship on Oct. 18 at Marbury High School.

“Tonight in both games we did a great job of being in control of the game the entire time,” said Thompson head coach Kellyanne Gandy. “I am so proud of  the girls and excited for their success.  We cannot wait to get back into the gym and start preparing for the Southern Super Regional.”

The Lady Warriors (20-15) began the night by defeating Wetumpka 25-10, 25-7, 25-14 to seal up a spot in the south super regional tournament.

Kelsea Bivins led Thompson with 11 kills and five digs with Katie Guiser adding six kills. Milea Ray finished with eight kills and a team-high six digs while Ashley Fondren had 18 assists to lead the Lady Warriors with seven aces.

Thompson ended the night by holding off Prattville in the third set to sweep the Lady Lions 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-23) for the area championship.

Kiarra Pettway led the Lady Warriors with six kills and seven digs while Ray added four kills and eight digs. August Newberry posted a team-high 20 digs and Tara Miller finished with 27 assists, six digs and a pair of aces.

Thompson will face the runner-up of from Area 3 in the first round of the AHSAA South Super Regionals at 6:45 p.m. on Oct. 26.
