Clifton L. Smith, born Aug 6, 1939, to William H. and Ethel L. Smith, passed away on April 5, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Clifton L. Smith Jr. and David Smith; sisters, Hazel Ray and Carolyn DelRosa; a brother, Raymond “Bill” Wooten; and a son-in-law, Jeffrey O’Martin.
His is survived by a wife of 49 years, Dorothy Smith; daughters, Tammy Vanderslice (George) of Wilsonville, Karen Martin of Maylene, Judy Carr (Terry) of Alabaster and Mary Ann Barker of Maylene; sons, William T. Smith of Maylene and James L. Smith Sr. of Huntsville, Texas; brother, Jim Smith (Carol) of Water Valley, Miss.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He worked for Moore-Handley and then later he went to work for the Alabaster Water Board and was there for 26 and a half years before retiring. He was also an auxiliary and part-time dispatch officer for the Alabaster Police Department. He was an Alabaster volunteer firefighter and he drove for the local ambulance service for a number of years. He has been working for The Birmingham News for the last 15 years. He was a loving father and great friend. He will be greatly missed by all.
Visitation was held on April 7 from 6-8 p.m. at Rockco Funeral Home Montevallo. Funeral services will be held April 8 at 2 p.m. at Rockco Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Larry Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Ryans Cemetery.
