Elda M. Handley, age 87, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2013. She is survived by her three sons Mitchell (Sue), Stancil (Somsup Ann) and Lindsay (Kathy); grandchildren, Lisa Martin, Chris Handley, Andy Handley, Frankie Stroud, Philding Handley, KC Handley, Jackie Calvert, Lee Bizek and Brandy Tuech; thirteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Mitchell Lynn Handley and Tawnya Bizek; her father, Benjamin McFarland Miller; her mother, Virgie Fike Miller; and four sisters Cora Jones, Ethyl Sanford, Ilene Sanford and Melva Shaw.

Elda’s services will be Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Columbiana Church of Christ on Highway 25 Bypass. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. and funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Elda will travel to Central Church in Walker County where she will be laid to rest beside her mother and father.


Elda was a Christian woman who loved her Lord and Savior. She was very knowledgeable of the bible and a faithful lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She loved gospel music and was comforted by her loved ones and church family singing gospel songs to her in her last hours on this earth. She loved her family and friends and was a loving caring mother who nurtured and prayed for her sons and family and friends when no one else would. Elda was much appreciated and well known for her quick wit and sense of humor. Her interests were in organic gardening and her beloved cockatiel, Luke, whose vocabulary exceeded thirty five words (according to Elda).
She loved riding horses in her younger years and her sons would run and hide when it was time to help Mother mount her favorite horse, Pinky. It always ended the same, with everyone doubled in laughter and Elda mounted up and ready to ride. Her knowledge of medicinal herbs was well known and she was often sought out for this knowledge as people sought herbal cures. Her life was full and she passed her passion for life to all around her. Her beautiful smile was contagious and you couldn’t help giving her one in return. We loved her and will always have a void in our lives where she resided.
