The Pelham Panthers softball team continues its impressive streak in the postseason, as they defeated Austin High, 2-1, to reach the AHSAA Class 6A Softball State semifinals.

The Bears got out to an early lead when Aleah Garth opened the game with a leadoff triple, and then was knocked in by a Sydney Dishman single, making it 1-0 in favor of Austin.

Both teams held each other scoreless through the next two innings, but the Panthers put together a series of hits and errors by the defense in the fourth to get into scoring position.

Reagan Curtis reached base on a throwing error by Austin third base Sophie Page, and later scored following a Becky Fox single and on a single by Alicia Richardson. Jordan Ingram and Kristian Foster both logged base hits and Richardson scored when Caitlyn Sapp singled, making it 2-1, Panthers.

It would prove to be all the run support the tandem of Fox and Gillespie needed, as Fox threw four innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four. Gillespie earned the save, allowing no hits and fanning five.

The Panthers will play Sparkman at 9 a.m. on Friday for a spot in the final round.
