Samuel Stewart McEwen, age 86, of Wilsonville, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2013, at his residence. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on June 30 at Wilsonville City Cemetery, with Rev. Steve Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on June 29 at Bolton Funeral Home, Columbiana.

Sammy is preceded in death by his wives, Doris Merrell McEwen and Barbara Edwards McEwen; and sisters, Ruby Smothers and Jewel Cox.

Sammy was an active member in the Wilsonville Baptist Church. He was one of the charter members of The Civitan Club of Wilsonville. Sammy served in the Navy during World War II. He opened the McEwen Mercantile Company in 1947, where it evolved into the McEwen Fresh Market until 2012. Sammy never met a stranger and he was loved by everyone. He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, compassion and servitude. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The American Cancer Society or the Shelby County Humane Society.
