A memorial service for Darlene H. Smith, 52, of Opelika was at 6 p.m. on Aug. 13, 2013, at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel with Chaplain James Q. Smith officiating. Darlene passed away on Aug. 7. She was born on Aug. 20, 1960, in Shelby County. She was a registered nurse for over 20 years. She felt hospice home care was her calling. She loved her family and also the beach, fishing and flowers/gardening.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Horton in 2008.

Survivors include her daughter, Jaclyn Smith; son, Austin Smith; mother, Dean Ward (Jesse); and granddaughter, Allison Smith all of Opelika; brothers, Frank Horton of Opelika and Russell Horton (Peggy) of Wilsonville. The family would like to express a thank you to all friends and extended family for their support.
