UM volleyball takes home opener

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo volleyball team held on to clinch a 3-2 win over visiting University of West Georgia in its home opener Sept. 10 at Trustmark Arena.

The Falcons outlasted the Wolves 25-19, 22-25, 28-26, 17-25 and 15-10 in five sets.

Sophomore Rebekah Phelps Montevallo (3-1) with 19 kills, which tied her career high she set last season against Francis Marion.
Seniors Michelle Carle, who finished with a .333 attack percentage, and Manyi Ati added 14 kills each. Ati posted her second double-double of the season after recording 15 digs in the match.

Junior Katie Best contributed nine kills, while sophomore Anna Quinn registered seven kills and 20 digs in the victory.

Senior Kaleigh Harvey registered a team-high 33 digs.

Freshman Hannah Christie posted her first double-double with a team-high 26 assists to go along with 11 digs. Sophomore Briana Marquez chipped in 23 assists and six digs.

The Falcons closed out a 25-19 win in the opening set following a 4-0 run to end the set, fueled with a pair of kills by Carle and a kill by Phelps.

Ati recorded a pair of kills early in the second set to help Montevallo jump out to a 7-3 lead in the frame, but the Wolves battled back to take the set 25-22.

A service ace by Harvey and a kill by Ati helped the Falcons close out a 28-26 win in the third set before the Wolves closed out the fourth set with five consecutive points in a 25-17 win in the set to send the match into a fifth set.

Phelps and Best recorded back-to-back kills to close out a 15-10 win in the final set.

The Falcons will return to action Sept. 13 as they open Peach Belt Conference play on the road at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
