Evangel keeps hot streak going

The Evangel Christian Lightning remained undefeated following a 55-0 victory over North River Christian Sept. 20.
The Lightning jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Andrew Thompson hit Josh Letson on a 49-yard pass for a touchdown. Dru Bell’s extra point was good, and ECS took the lead at the 11:26 mark in the first quarter.
On the ensuing North River drive, Aaron Clayton picked off a pass and returned it 18 yards. This set up Pete Sullivan, who busted a 52-yard run for a touchdown. Bell was good again, and the Lightning held a 14-0 advantage.
Grant Webster picked off an errant and took it 46 yards for the next score, with Bell’s extra point making it 21-0.
Thompson then scored through the air when he hit Caleb Hoge for 31-yards and a touchdown. Bell was on the mark again, increasing the lead to 28-0 with 7:21 left in the first.
The Lightning scored again on a David Shepperd run, making it 35-0 after Bell’s extra point.
ECS scored again when Clay O’Neal took a punt return 60 yards for a score. Bell mixed the extra point, leaving the score 41-0 Evangel at the end of the first.
O’Neal score the first points of the second quarter, breaking a 60-yard run for a touchdown. Bell was good, making the lead 48-0 in favor of Evangel at half.
The only points of the second half came when Sam Stockman returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown, with the extra point making the final score 55-0, Evangel.
Evangel finished with 297 yards on the ground and three touchdowns, while Thompson went 2-for-4 for 80 yards and a touchdown.
The Lightning is off Sept. 27, and will face Evangel Family Oct. 4 for homecoming.
