The Shelby County School System and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a former Pelham High School assistant principal, but had not brought any charges in the incident as of Nov. 26.

Shelby County Schools spokesperson Cindy Warner and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ken Burchfield confirmed the open investigation on Nov. 26, but said they could not yet release any information on the matter.

“There is an investigation concerning a matter involving a former employee of the Shelby County Schools,” Warner wrote in a statement. “We are not at liberty to comment further, due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. We have complete confidence in law enforcement officials to handle this situation properly.”

Warner said the investigation involves a former employee who resigned from their position at the school, but said she could not confirm the employee’s resignation date or identity.

Burchfield said the Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation at the request of the Pelham Police Department.

“Pelham asked us out of an abundance of caution, because it involves an assistant principal, to avoid anyone saying there is a conflict,” Burchfield said.

Burchfield said the investigation will determine if any charges are brought in the case in the future.

“If the elements of a crime are there, we will present evidence for charges to be filed,” Burchfield said.
