The threat of frigid temperatures across central Alabama over the next several days has caused the Shelby County and Alabaster school systems to delay the start of the school day by two hours on Jan. 6-7.

In addition to the school day starting two hours later than normal those two days, bus routes also will run two hours later than normal.

Breakfast will not be served those two days in Shelby County and Alabaster schools.

“This is to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Ferguson wrote in an email.

Alabaster School Operations Coordinator Jeff Atkins said Alabaster also will delay the start of the school day and bus routes by two hours on Jan. 6-7. Alabaster School System employees will receive correspondence from their schools, Atkins said.

Jan. 6 is the first day of school after the two-week Christmas holiday for children in Alabaster and Shelby County schools.

The National Weather Service is calling for lows in the teens and below each night from Sunday, Jan. 5-Tuesday, Jan. 7.
