MONTEVALLO—The Boys and Girls Club of Montevallo will host two summer programs for students ages 6 through twelve.

The 8-week program will run from June 2 through July 25, and the 10 and a half-week program will run from May 28 through August 6.

Students will participate in a variety of activities such as swimming, dancing, athletics, art, music, movies and games.

Of all of these activities, swimming at the pool on the campus of the University of Montevallo is “definitely the students’ favorite,” Director Feda Shivers said.

Kids will also play a variety of brain games to “slow down the loss that happens between school years,” Shivers said, and will participate in community service as well as learn about photography, music and art.

Each week will have a unique theme such as “Going Green” where the children will learn about environmental awareness and watch the movie Epic at Parnell Memorial Library, and “Mystery Week” where a crime scene will be set up for the students to solve.

As part of Project Learn, students will study a variety of games such as chess and backgammon.

“These games get the children to use their brains in a strategic way,” Shivers said.

Though fun and learning are primary goals of the programs, the summer camp fulfills a need for the community.

“Summer is a long break,” Shivers said. “Many of our parents work, and their kids are too young to stay home alone. This gives them a great place to go.”
