Shelby County BOE approves key positions

COLUMBIANA—The Shelby County Board of Education unanimously approved a motion to appoint John Lewis as the new supervisor of payroll during their June 5 meeting.
Lewis is currently director of payroll for the Birmingham Board of Education, and has served as the chief financial officer for the Conecuh Board of Education.
Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of South Alabama.
“I’m looking forward to it, and I’ll make sure everyone gets paid,” Lewis said during the meeting, inciting laughs from the crowd.
The board also approved John Gwin as supervisor of finance and accounting.
Gwin has served as the financial analyst for Shelby County Schools since 2012, and previously served as an accounting assistant since 2006.
Gwin earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from the University of South Alabama. He became a certified public accountant in 2009. Gwin is a member of the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Alabama Association of School Business Officials.
“I’m really excited about this new position,” Gwin said. “I can’t wait to get in and start taking care of business.”
