The Evangel Christian School picked up where it left off at the end of the 2013 season, taking a decisive win over the Tuscaloosa Christian Warriors on the road, 48-6, Aug. 15.

“It was a great confidence builder,” ECS head coach Don Murphy said. “We spread (the ball) around, the defense played real well.”

Murphy was also quick to praise the efforts of several young player son the team, as the squad replaced 13 of 16 starters from last season.

“They stepped up like champs,” he said. “They did extremely well. Our young linemen did well. It was a total team effort.”

The win marks Murphy’s first as the new varsity head coach at Evangel, as he took over from Del Clayton in the offseason. Murphy said he was glad to have opened with such a strong performance.

“It was a confidence booster for me,” he said.
