When I think about going back to the Alabama Legislature for four more years, my mind is immediately flooded with memories of the highs and lows of our first term.
I was blessed to sponsor legislation that made synthetic marijuana (Spice) illegal. I sponsored legislation that created a DUI ignition interlock program. And, I was amazed when I received a unanimous vote to pass Carly’s Law at 2 a.m. in the Alabama House. However, God also allowed one of my first term memories to leave a mental scar.
There is no doubt that the enormous secrecy I discovered surrounding the Jefferson County Legislative Office Fund became a thorn in my flesh. It’s still there!
2 Corinthians 12:7 To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surprisingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.
I can clearly remember a profound question my friend Pam Segars Morris asked me one afternoon a few weeks after the 2010 elections.  She looked me in the eye and asked: Do you think you’re going to have the stomach for politics?
As I think about beginning my second term, I can honestly say that I have a real problem with some of the people associated with Alabama politics. But, some of the best people I have ever met are also associated with Alabama politics. I am more committed than ever to uncover the corrupt and shine a light in the halls of the Alabama State House that will put Satan on the run.  I think good old Christian integrity is the best medicine for calming a queasy stomach in Montgomery.
Psalm 37:5-6 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: (6) He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
