Earl V. Wilkey, age 90, died Saturday, Dec. 13 in Wilsonville.
Born in Birmingham, May 18, 1924 where he lived for 75 years, he was the fourth child to the late Alva L. Wilkey and Viola Acton Wilkey. He served in the US Navy during WW II aboard the USS Cache from October 1942 until August 1946. After his ship was torpedoed and coming in to San Diego Naval Station for repairs, he met his wife of 57 years, Maxine (Mickey) Kelso Wilkey, serving in the US W.A.V.E.S. at San Diego Naval Hospital.
He was a life member of VFW Post #668, life member and former president of Concordia Beneficial Society and a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, building committee chairman, councilman, choir member for over 35 years, and actively involved in searching for and locating new locations for the church and the Concordia Club.
Mr. Wilkey retired from the Birmingham Fire Department with forty years of service and as co-owner of Alva L. Wilkey and Sons General Contracting. Being well known as a man of integrity, with a handshake serving as his word, his leadership qualities and knowledge for business were well respected. Throughout his life, he was devoted to his family, God, the USA and his Auburn Tigers.
The funeral service will be held at noon, Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Bolton Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Stone and Fred Ehrensperger officiating. Burial will follow in Chilton Memorial Gardens in Clanton.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Bolton Funeral Home.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Wilkey is preceded in death by his brothers, Douglas and Gene and his sisters, Lorene Mote and Florene Wideman.
He is survived by wife of eight years, Louise M. Wilkey; daughters, Sandra (Bob) Sloan, Susan (Manny) Vallin, Barbara (Buddy) Sisson; Leanne (David) Smith; seven granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; sister, Julia Morrow and numerous additional family and friends.
